We had fun working an a place-making project with the GEE Project and an inspiring group of high school students. At Mason Education Centre, next to Windsor’s Gateway Public Park Trail, and between the school’s parking lot and University Ave. W. lies an unprogrammed, underused patch of grass. Using a dilapidated fence as our canvas, we worked with students to conceive a graphic, a giant text message. we put our heads together with more than a dozen students to come up with messages of hope, transformation, collaboration…The result was:

Become Community
Become Unity
Be Community

We created a pattern and, using nothing more than recycled fabric scraps, students wove their design into the chain link. The result is a moment of vibrant colour and whimsy; something beautiful and an aspirant note for the users of the facility, pedestrians, passers-by.

The GEE (Ground Engage Express) project is a community - based summer program offered through the Greater Essex County District School Board. The program is based in experiential learning activities centred around gardening and visual arts for urban renewal and revitalization. It is an opportunity to model engaged citizenship and sustainable activism. Students are encouraged to buy into the betterment of their communities by introducing them to their voice and agency.
