Mean Studio was approached to design the additions and alterations of the building, originally built in 1853, located at a prominent corner of the historic downtown core of Amherstburg. The building originally existed as a Milliner’s shop and underwent a number of uses and alterations in the 120+ years of its lifespan. Means Studio engaged in several interactions with the local heritage committee alongside creating an extensive heritage document. One of the main objectives of the restoration was to reintroduce the prominent shop front presence, including a tripartite wood-clad facade. The unique chamfered entrance is also reintroduced, however, stepped back for better functionality and to meet code requirements. 2x commercial units are planned for the ground level with residential on the upper level.
